A highlight on our event calendar every year is our ISA Calgary Section Awards Night, held in November. This is a chance for us to recognize local members that have not only made huge contributions to our Section, but also to the automation industry as whole.
In 2019, Simon Lucchini took home the top award, Automation Professional Of The Year. This award recognizes an individual that exemplifies outstanding involvement with automation.
Why Simon Won…
- Simon spent 17 years of his career at Fluor where he provided practical and patient guidance, and mentored both within Fluor and within the larger automation community.
- Now retired, he worked at Fluor in the Control Systems department. He was the Fluor Global Fellow in Safety Systems Design and the Chief Controls Specialist (based at the Fluor Calgary, Alberta, Canada office).
- He co-authored the most recent edition of ISA’s Safety Instrumented Systems: A Life Cycle Approach and previously contributed several chapters to publications.
- His outstanding contribution to the success of the 2019 ISA Calgary Show conference that was held in conjunction with the exhibition in April.
- He was one of the few committee members who recorded a promotional video for the event.
- More importantly he ‘stepped in’ whenever help was required including:
- Covering as Cybersecurity Track Moderator
- Recruiting keynote speakers
- Reviewing papers/presentations
- He has a Bachelor of Electrical Engineering and Science degrees from Sydney University, Australia.
- He wrote several white papers on Safety Systems for various industry and academic venues, including two chapters in the 2017 Bela Liptak Instrument & Automation Engineers’ Handbook.
- He has served as both Director-Elect and Director of the International Society of Automation Safety & Security Division.
