AI&OT Technical Talk Overview
Artificial Intelligence (AI), particularly Large Language Models (LLMs), is taking the world by storm and appearing everywhere — except perhaps in the Operations Technology (OT) space. This presentation will test this hypothesis by explaining AI and its capabilities, particularly what it can and cannot do in the OT realm.
AI has evolved from simple heuristic models to where it is today, with LLMs such as ChatGPT, Bard, and CoPilot assisting with everything from translating web pages to meeting transcripts and contributing to manuscripts.
Over the past 18 months, governments have proposed new regulations worldwide due to the significant impact LLMs can have on individuals, resulting in many privacy concerns. The lack of LLM traceability is a significant contributing factor to why governments feel there is a need for regulation. Recently published international standards are another tool used to help appropriately manage AI.
Despite LLMs getting all the attention, they are just one form of AI. Other AIs besides LLM, such as Machine Learning (ML), are easier to train and validate models that meet the rigid requirements of the OT realm of “always” needing to work, and when they fail, they do not cause the facility to crash. Hence, traceability and validation are needed to confirm the same outputs for given inputs and ensure that OT software always fails gracefully.
After providing an overview of the AI landscape and its evolution, the talk will conclude with an award-winning example of how AI can make a difference in OT operations with documented significant returns on investment.
