2026-2027 President’s Message – Envisioning Value

It is an honour and a privilege to serve as President of the ISA Calgary Section. Having worked in the automation industry for over 25 years and as an active ISA member for the past 15, I have witnessed remarkable changes in our profession.
We are entering one of the most exciting periods in the history of automation. Technologies such as Artificial Intelligence (AI), Machine Learning (ML), the Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT), Digital Twins, Advanced Process Control, Industrial Cybersecurity, Data Analytics, Autonomous Operations, Smart Manufacturing, and Cloud Computing are redefining how industrial facilities are designed, operated, and maintained.
The pace of change is accelerating, and the future will not be shaped by simply repeating what worked in the past. While the experience and knowledge gained over decades remain invaluable, we must continuously learn, adapt, and embrace new ways of thinking – and doing. Successful organizations and professionals will be those who combine practical experience with emerging technologies and apply innovative, smarter solutions to address increasingly complex challenges.
As President, one of my primary goals is to increase the value our members receive from the ISA Calgary Section. I envision... creating new (and supporting existing) special interest groups that collaborate to lead programs, organize events, contribute to technical discussions, and support ISA initiatives. This approach will not only help develop future leaders but also ensure that vital lessons and experiences gained by seasoned professionals are passed on to the next generation. Additionally, I want to propel our new mentorship initiative.
Further to this, I would like to focus on the following key areas:
- Expanding technical learning opportunities through training courses and Technical Talks.
- Strengthening relationships with post-secondary institutions.
- Creating opportunities for leadership development and volunteer engagement.
- Promote innovation, safety, and technical excellence across our profession.
Whether you’re a student, new graduate, early-career professional, or a seasoned industry expert, I encourage you to get involved. Together, we can build a stronger automation community, develop the next generation of leaders, and ensure that our industry continues to evolve and thrive in an increasingly digital world.
